Bluesky is gearing up to revolutionize social networking with the introduction of its ‘communities’ feature, slated for launch later this year. This innovative addition aims to foster deeper connections among users by creating smaller, interest-based spaces where like-minded individuals can engage meaningfully.

According to Alex Benzer, Bluesky's head of product, the upcoming communities will operate under the decentralized AT Protocol that serves as the foundation of Bluesky. Benzer describes these communities as a dynamic new structure designed to enhance user interaction in an ecosystem he refers to as the 'Atmosphere.' 'On Bluesky, you’ll be able to create communities, join them, post in them, and get updates,' he explained in a recent thread. 'The core features on Bluesky stay simple. The magic comes from communities also existing on the open web, allowing for true customization and integration with other Atmospheric apps and tools.'

Each community will feature a unique handle that doubles as a URL, leading members to a custom homepage dedicated to their interests. This opens the door for builders to customize the experience further, catering to specific needs and desires within each community. Privacy is also a priority; communities will offer three distinct privacy levels—public, invite-only, and private—ensuring members can choose their desired level of visibility.

Benzer’s announcement comes on the heels of Bluesky COO Rose Wang’s remarks, which emphasized the platform’s shift away from being merely a ‘public square.’ Drawing inspiration from platforms like Reddit, Bluesky seeks to promote intimate discussions amongst users, steering clear of the chaos often associated with large-scale public interactions.

As the digital landscape evolves, Bluesky is positioning itself alongside competitors like Meta’s Threads, which is currently experimenting with similar community features, while X (formerly Twitter) recently announced the discontinuation of its own version. As users increasingly seek tailored online experiences, Bluesky’s upcoming communities promise to redefine how social connections are formed and nurtured in the digital age.

For more updates, stay tuned as Bluesky unveils this game-changing feature and invites users to explore their newfound spaces for connection.
