In a bold move that echoes its history of mimicking rivals, Instagram has unveiled 'Instants,' a new feature designed to revitalize casual photo sharing among users. Beginning today, this innovative format allows users to share ephemeral images exclusively with their close friends, offering a level of intimacy reminiscent of platforms like Snapchat and BeReal.

Accessible globally through the Instagram app and a dedicated testing version in select countries, Instants marks a significant shift in the platform's approach to social media engagement. To start using Instants, simply navigate to your direct messages, where you’ll find a new icon representing the feature. After sharing a photo, friends can react with emojis or reply directly via DMs, but as is the nature of ephemeral content, it vanishes after they view it. Furthermore, photos disappear entirely after 24 hours, ensuring a fleeting yet impactful sharing experience. Users can enjoy a layer of privacy with the inability to capture screenshots or screen recordings, although their shared Instants will remain archived for their personal use for up to a year, with the option to highlight select moments in Instagram Stories.

Instagram's head, Adam Mosseri, highlighted the strategic intent behind Instants, stating, "We've observed that users engage with Instants to share more casual and authentic snapshots of their daily lives. This aligns with our goal of fostering genuine interactions among friends, catering to a growing desire for spontaneity in social sharing. Many users no longer post regularly to their profile grids, which informs our approach toward features like Instants."

The dedicated Instants app, which initially launched in Italy and Spain in April, promised to streamline access to photo sharing. Users need only an Instagram account to leverage its functionality, showcasing a commitment to creating a seamless user experience. "Instants shared via the separate app will appear on users’ main Instagram feeds as well, allowing us to track how this community engages with the feature and evolve accordingly," Mosseri added.

As social media continues to evolve, Instagram’s Instants could offer a timely reprieve from the pressure of polished content, inviting users to embrace more genuine, unfiltered moments.
