As of February 18, 2027, all portable gaming devices sold within the European Union will be required to have batteries that can be easily replaced by users.
In a statement on its official website, Nintendo confirmed that it is implementing changes to comply with these regulatory requirements. As highlighted by repair advocacy group iFixit, the existing battery replacement procedure for the Switch 2 typically involves disassembling the device, a situation Nintendo aims to rectify with the new model. “For current products with model numbers starting with ‘BEE’, future compliant versions will have unique model numbers and the additional code ‘OSM’ visible on the packaging,” the company noted. This updated labeling will help consumers identify compliant devices easily.
